Study as part of the program

To meet the program’s visa requirements, all au pairs must study while in the USA. This is flexible and designed to fit around your childcare schedule.

You choose the course you want to take

How much study is required?

The number of study hours depends on the program you are part of:
Program Type Required Study Time
Au pair (Standard or APEX) 6 semester hours (about 80 classroom hours)
Extending Au Pair (6 months) 3 additional credits
Extending Au Pair (9–12 months) 6 additional credits

Additional Credits: These are extra credits you need to take, beyond what your program normally requires.

Education in the USA can be expensive for international students. With Au Pair in America, your host family will contribute up to $500 toward your education.

You may need to add some of your own money if your course costs more than this, so it’s important to plan ahead.

Study online with UCLA: APIA Advantage Course

We are proud to be the only au pair program that partners with UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles).

The UCLA Au Pair in America Advantage is a 19-week online course in American Studies. It is approved by the US Department of State and fulfills the education requirement for au pairs.

This course includes:

A mix of online learning and real-life activities in your local community

Six credits on completion

Volunteering, cultural activities, and giving a presentation as part of your learning

You’ll also connect with other au pairs through group projects and interactive sessions.
